Managing Safely (3 day)

Outline

Managing Safely at Dudley MBC is designed to ensure that managers and supervisors understand the legal requirements for managing health and safety and are aware of the key elements and processes required.

Description

Day 1

Aims and objectives
The aim of the day is to ensure delegates understand the legal duties imposed on the Council and employees and their role in ensuring compliance as managers.

By the end of the session delegates will understand;
  • the importance of health and safety and the truth behind the myths
  • the difference between criminal and civil aspects of health and safety
  • the legal standards applied to health and safety duties
  • the key requirements and duties of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999

Day 2

Aims and objectives
The aim of the day is to ensure delegates understand what a management system involves as well as the purpose and method of risk assessment.

By the end of the session delegates will;
  • understand the key elements of a health and safety management system
  • understand the legal requirements for risk assessment
  • understand the process of risk assessment
  • understand the strengths and weaknesses of common risk control approaches


Day 3

Aims and objectives
The aim of the day is to ensure delegates understand why accidents and incidents occur and are able to investigate and determine causes to develop effective remedial actions.

By the end of the session delegates will;
  • understand the differences between different types of adverse event
  • know the reasons why investigation is important
  • Understand the requirements of the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR)
  • know what to expect when a health and safety inspector calls
  • understand adverse event causation
  • understand adverse event investigation techniques and how to use them effectively

Post-course project
Carried out in an area of choice within the delegates’ own day-to-day areas of responsibility.
Purpose: To help managers apply course learning in a real-world situation relevant to them.
